Learning the Cello as an Adult

The cello is a great instrument to learn as an adult and whether you are a beginner or are an experienced player, there are opportunities for learning and performing with the cello.

Many area teachers have experience working with adult students. It's not too late to learn.

Generally we recommend working with a private teacher and getting personalized help rather than going it alone by piecing together videos and method books you find. However we're excited about a new project by Austin cellist Carolyn Hagler: Cello Discovery. This looks to be online learning done the right way. If you are an adult beginning want something affordable that gives you the chance to go at your own pace and you get support from her and a community of other adult students then this might be a great option for you. It has just been opened to new members. Check it out at CelloDiscovery.com.

These are just a couple of the organizations that welcome adults cellists. Check to find which are the best match for your skill level.

Austin Chamber Music Center

Austin Cello Choir (Take part in the Covid Cello Project in lieu of this for now!)

Starlight Symphony

There may be a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic but check them out now to be ready for their return.
